Leadership Academy

SIL’s Leadership Academy is an eight-week governance course for individuals with disabilities designed to help participants gain the skills and tools needed to participate on nonprofit boards, committees, community coalitions or task forces in a meaningful way. SIL strongly believes that individuals with disabilities should be able to participate fully in their communities of choice and be at the table to add the disability perspective. The voice of the disability community is needed at all tables; this population can offer a unique perspective that is often needed but missed. The goal of the academy is to increase the number of persons with disabilities prepared to engage in community leadership roles.
SIL offers two (2) Leadership Academy sessions a year.  The sessions include guest speakers, hands-on activities and role playing. The focus is on developing a basic working knowledge of and understanding of the following topics:
    • Community Leadership
    • Disability History & Advocacy
    • Functions of a Nonprofit Board
    • Government Committees, Commissions, Task Forces & Councils
    • Communications, Confidentiality & Board Ethics
    • Networking and Importance of Developing Community Contacts

Fall/Winter 2020 Session

October 26 – December 14, 2020; Monday afternoons, 1:00 – 4:00 pm
(October 26; November 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; December 7, 14)

Upon successful completion of the Leadership Academy, SIL will work with graduates to identify and match potential leadership opportunities in the community.  This can range anywhere from serving on a nonprofit board or joining a task force or committee or applying new skills to be a more effective member of a committee one is already on.  Additionally, as part of a mentoring program, SIL will pair current students with Leadership Academy graduates.
