Making a Difference

  • Through a grant funded by OSILC, SIL had a Home Modification & Emergency preparedness grant that allowed persons that identified with paralysis to obtain minor home modifications and to participate in an emergency preparedness class.  SIL was able to assist 7 people with 4 grab bars, 2 ramps, 3 handheld shower heads, 1 stair lift, and 1 VPL.  A total of 20 people attended the emergency preparedness class.

  • SIL was awarded a grant through Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD), Young Adult Council (YAC) was formed and is a statewide community led council; hands-on/internship approach that will provide young adults the opportunity to participate in a realistic policymaking environment.  This program is facilitated by SIL’s Independent Living Specialist, April Shaw.  Check our calendar for exact dates of classes!

  • SIL has a 96% satisfaction rating for individual services provided.  Surveys were conducted by a non-direct care staff member at the conclusion of services.  In addition, 93% reported the CIL assisted them in achieving their goals and 94% of closed consumers would recommend the CIL to friends/family.  When asked how SIL services will help in everyday life, the most common answer was “knowing how to advocate for myself,” with “managing my disability” and “controlling my own life” tied for second in next common answers shared.

  • SIL’s Supplies for Independent Living helps individuals obtain gently used or new items that were not covered by their insurance carrier.  Types of equipment included items such as wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds and incontinence supplies.  156 items were distributed to 49 individuals in the last reporting year.  If you are in need of an item, please call our office and check out inventory!  A medical script is needed for all items.

  • SIL has partnered with OOD (Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities) and OSILC (Ohio Statewide Independent Living Council) again to host the statewide Youth Leadership Forum. The virtual forum will be held 7/11/2022-7/15/2022.  Download the Flyer and Application.

  • SIL received another 3-year accreditation by CARF (Commission on Accreditation on Rehabilitation Facilities) earlier this year!

  • SIL is a community member of ALL MEANS ALL – a CCBDD initiative to make communities as inclusive as possible from everyday life, employment, recreation activities and more.  For more information, see the link for a guide to inclusive places, jobs, and events.  (https://cuyahogabdd.org/resources/guide-to-inclusive-places-jobs-and-events/)
